ExpedMed DC Conference
The ExpedMed 2012 Expedition Medicine and Wilderness Medicine National Conference provides an excellent educational opportunity for medical professionals interested in practicing in remote or extreme environments, or consulting on patients returning from these locations. Each ExpedMed Expedition Medicine and Wilderness Medicine conference is uniquely designed to provide attendees with the most current information available in the field, taught by the experts who know it best.
Faculty
The distinguished faculty for the 2012 ExpedMed Washington, DC conference are the following:
- Gregory H. Bledsoe, MD, MPH Dr. Bledsoe is the conference director and the founder of ExpedMed. Dr. Bledsoe is the chief editor of Expedition & Wilderness Medicine, the textbook used as a syllabus for all ExpedMed events. Dr. Bledsoe completed a two-year fellowship in International Emergency Medicine within the Johns Hopkins Department of Emergency Medicine and is a member of The Explorers Club.
- Michael V. Callahan, MD, DTM&H, MSPH Dr. Callahan is a sought-after national educator on Wilderness Medicine. Dr. Callahan is a specialist in Infectious Disease on faculty at Harvard who works for DARPA and has a research focus in envenomations, high altitude medicine, and remote medical rescue and transport.
- Christina Catlett, MD, FACEP Dr. Catlett is an Emergency Medicine physician on faculty within the Johns Hopkins Department of Emergency Medicine. She is an expert in Disaster Medicine and serves as the Associate Director, The Johns Hopkins Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response. Dr. Catlett has extensive international and Wilderness Medicine experience including serving as a staff physician at Everest Base Camp.
- Peter Hackett, MD Dr. Hackett is one of the world's leading authorities on high altitude medicine. He is the director of the Institute of Altitude Medicine in Telluride, Colorado.
- Alan J. Magill, MD, FACP, FISDA Dr. Magill is an Infectious Disease specialist and a former president of the International Society of Travel Medicine. He is a well-known authority in Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine and a co-editor of the famed "Yellow Book," the leading textbook of Travel Medicine published by the CDC. Dr. Magill is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army and currently works for DARPA.
- Matthew S. Partrick, MD Dr. Partrick is an Emergency Medicine physician who has a subspecialty focus on Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine. He is the director of the Institute for Diving Medicine and a member of The Explorers Club. Dr. Partrick has extensive field experience including mulltiple expeditions in underwater archeology.
- Will Smith, MD, NREMT-P, FAWM Dr. Smith is an Emergency Medicine physician and the Medical Director of the Teton County Search and Rescue that deploys into Grand Teton National Park. Dr. Smith also has a military background and is president of the Wilderness and Emergency Medicine Consulting.
- David A. Townes, MD, MPH, DTM&H Dr. Townes is an Emergency Medicine physician on faculty with the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Townes has served as a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the CDC and is the Medical Director of Remote Medical International. As co-editor of the Expedition & Wilderness Medicine textbook, Dr. Townes is a frequent public speaker and one of the world's authorities on managing crowds and medical teams for competitive, remote athletic endeavors.
Course Objectives
Upon completion, attendees will have a solid understanding of the principles of working in foreign countries, wilderness, extreme environments and remote locations. Sessions are taught by carefully selected experts with distinctive academic credentials and experience in their field. Attendees will be equipped with the tools to embark on their own expedition or recover patients from expeditions.

Medical professionals who are actively practicing or are interested in practicing in remote locations, or who treat patients returning from these locations. The primary attendees are medical providers including: physicians, nurses, PA's and paramedics.
